GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The Malone University Men's Lacrosse team traveled to Grand Rapids, Michigan for their first GMAC road contest versus the Davenport University Panthers. The Panthers came out quick and ultimately led wire-to-wire despite the great resilience of the Pioneers. Malone's 18-11 defeat drops them to 2-4 on the young season (1-1 GMAC).
The Pioneers looked to carry the momentum from their domination over Davis & Elkins into this road match up. Unfortunately, Davenport came out firing as they scored six of the first seven goals with
John Mautz III managing the only goal for Malone during the dominant Panther stretch. Malone looked to get back into things as
Luke Ory and
Zac Smargiasso threaded a sea of Panther defenders to close the gap to three, scoring a goal a piece. Davenport took a 6-3 lead into the second quarter but the momentum favored Malone.
Smargiasso opened the second quarter by rifling home a feed from Ory.
Talon Heath followed suit with his first goal of the game to cut the deficit to one. Defense struggled for Malone as five consecutive Panther goals brought their lead up to six. Heath and Smargiasso closed out the half with a pair of goals to leave things at 11-6 in favor of the home team.
Kamden Kraft opened the second half by taking the opening face-off all the way to the net for a Pioneer goal. Davenport scored two more but
Ramsey Burnard took advantage of an extra man opportunity to answer back. Despite second half goals from Ory and Mautz III, Malone failed to bring things any closer as they ultimately lost an 18-11 final.
Ory led Malone with a pair of goals and assists to finish with four points. Burnard, Smargiasso, and Heath each had three points.
William Fink collected six groundballs while
Wayne Keating forced a trio of turnovers.
Nick Sanderson continued his strong play in net for the Pioneers as he finished with a career high eighteen saves.
Malone continues their road trip as they will head to Tiffin, Ohio to take on the Tiffin University Dragons this Saturday, March 15th at 12:00 p.m.
