Oliver's Big Night Pushes Pioneers to Victory

CANTON, Ohio – The #25 Malone University Pioneers women's basketball team won their seventh game in a row against the Ursuline College Arrows, 57-65, for their first conference win of the season. The Pioneers advance to 7-0 overall, while the Arrows drop to 2-4 on the season. In the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), Malone stands at 1-0 and Ursuline sits at 0-1.
 
The Pioneers started the first quarter with momentum as Brinn Hunt was able to nail a three-pointer to give Malone a five-point lead over the Arrows early in the first. Ursuline was able to change the pace of the quarter by cutting the Pioneers lead to just one point going into the second quarter, 11-10.
 
The second quarter started hot for both teams as they stayed close with the score until Anna Krupa and Elena Oliver were able to extend Malone's lead 23-16. Ursuline was able to cut the lead and tie the second quarter 23-23 with little over two minutes left in the first half. Alyssa Geiser would then break the tie with a good free throw. The Pioneers would then see the free throw line again with 1:06 left in the half with Oliver as she was able to make both free throws. With 30 seconds left, Ursuline was able to find the basket to cut their deficit to 26-25 going into halftime.
 
At the start of the third quarter, both teams continued to fight for the lead. It wasn't until Bridget Barber made a clean three-pointer to give Malone a 39-32 lead with 4:39 left in the quarter. The Pioneers would continue to extend their lead to 41-32 with a lay-up by Oliver with 3:46 left on the clock. Not too long after, Malone would find a steal by Abbey Price and would seal the defensive effort with a good jumper with 1:07 left in the quarter. Alia Miller was able to find the basket with 26 seconds left to extend the Pioneers lead 48-39. Ursuline would finish the third quarter with a good three-pointer cutting Malone's lead to 48-42 going into the 4th.
 
In the fourth quarter, the Pioneers would come to life as Nataley Armstrong was able to steal the ball and earn two free throws for Malone. Miller would later extend Malone's lead to 42-52 with 9:10 left in the game. The Arrows would try to cut the lead down but could not handle the Pioneers as Price sealed a shot in the paint. Armstrong would then make a three-pointer with 3:55 left to extend the Pioneers lead 59-50. With 15 seconds left in the game, Oliver would put the game on ice as she sealed Malone's victory with two free throws, making the score 65-57.
 
Erin Kaufman held the Pioneers together by recording 10 rebounds in the paint. Oliver was a key player in Malone's offense as she had 20 points in tonight's game. Price, Armstrong, and Hunt were able to record a pair of steals each solidifying the defensive performance for the Pioneers.
 
The 25th ranked Malone University Pioneers look to continue their perfect season as they host the Tiffin University Dragons for their second Great Midwest Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday, December 6. Tip-off is at 1:00 P.M.
