CEDARVILLE, Ohio – The Malone University women's basketball team continues its win streak as they secured a road win against the Cedarville University Yellow Jackets, 75-52. The Pioneers stand tall on the season, moving to 9-0 while the Yellow Jackets drop to 4-5 on the year. In the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), Malone leads the conference at 3-0 and Cedarville falls to 1-2.
The first quarter started hot for the Pioneers as
Bridget Barber and
Nataley Armstrong started the game off with one three-pointer each. It wasn't long until
Elena Oliver increased Malone's lead with a free throw, and then another three-pointer by Armstrong gave the Pioneers a 10-0 lead with 6:55 left in the first quarter.
Malone kept the momentum rolling as
Erin Kaufman had a successful tip-in and a three-pointer by
Brinn Hunt. Cedarville could not stop the Pioneers as
Aila Miller was able to make a layup in the paint to go up 17-5 with a little over four minutes left in the first.
Abbey Price made it 22-8 at the end of the first quarter with a pair of free throws.
Malone dominated the second quarter as well with a three's from
Alyssa Geiser, Armstrong and Hunt in the first three minutes of the period. Geiser would keep the three-point shooting parade going with another successful try from deep later in the second. As the quarter was coming to an end, Barber, Price, and Kaufman were successful in finding the basket to put the Pioneers up 47-18 at halftime.
The leading scorers Armstrong and Price kept Malone in front early in the third with the score at 51-29 with 6:42 left. Hunt and
Kylee Bruce would drain three-point shots for Malone on a fast break with 4:39 left in the third. The Pioneers would finish the third quarter with a 61-33 lead from last-minute scoring by Miller and Oliver.
As the Yellow Jackets tried to bring some life in the fourth quarter and won the period 19-14, but it was not enough to dig themselves out of the hole they were in. Kaufman had six points in the fourth quarter to help secure the double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds in total.
Meredith Randulic and Barber made field goals late to secure the 75-52 victory.
Price and Armstrong shared the team lead with 11 points each. Kaufman had 13 rebounds and led the way with four assists.
The Pioneers look to carry their momentum from this win on the road again in Painesville, Ohio to take on the Lake Erie College Storm in another G-MAC matchup. Tip-off time is 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, December 13.
