Saints Triumph over Pioneers

CANTON, Ohio - The Malone University volleyball team fell to 5-14 on the season and 4-4 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) with a 3-1 loss against Thomas More University (9-9, 5-3 G-MAC).

The Pioneers took set one by a score of 25-23. A 6-0 run for the home team was capped off by an ace from Madalyn Coblentz to go up 12-4 in the early going. The Saints battled back and got all the way to within one at 24-23, but an attack error by the Saints allowed Malone to claim the first.

Thomas More was in control of the second set and cruised to a 25-16 win to draw even at one set apiece. The Pioneers had just two attack errors, but a match-high .306 hitting percentage for the Saints led to the victory.

The offense for Thomas More continued in the third set with 21 kills on 25 points. Malone hung in there, but could not come away with the win, 25-22. Jaymes Gilbert and Marissa Smith paced the Pioneers in the set, but it was not enough.

In set four, it was more of the same. The Saints took the match with a 25-22 win once again. Thomas More went up 7-2 and maintained that advantage for the duration of the period. Brianne Salinas tacked on four kills in the frame.

Helaina Edgar assisted on 29 of the team's 38 total kills and recorded a career-high 13 digs to pace the defense. Gilbert and Salinas tied for the team lead with 10 kills. Annika Nichols and Hailey Conrad had three blocks.

The Pioneers will celebrate Nichols and graduating junior Laiken Wallick during senior day prior to the start of their next match on Saturday, October 25 versus Kentucky Wesleyan College. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 P.M.
