PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – Junior
Erin Kaufman scored her 1,000th career point as a member of the Malone University women's basketball team in a 54-30 triumph at Ursuline College. The Pioneers have won six straight games and are 11-2 overall and 5-0 inside the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). With the loss, the Arrows are 2-11 and 1-4 in league play.
The defense for Malone held Ursuline to a season-low 30 points and 24.0% (12-of-50) from the field. The Arrows were without a make from beyond the three-point arc in 12 tries and the Pioneers forced 21 turnovers. Kaufman was the lone scorer in double figures with 21 while junior
Brinn Hunt tallied a team-high 10 rebounds and four assists.
Malone claimed a 10-6 lead through the first 10 minutes of action thanks to back-to-back scores to close the frame. Hunt had a layup and then junior
Nataley Armstrong found senior
Brooklyn Troyer for three in the final seconds of the period.
The Arrows kept the game in reach with a repeat performance in the second quarter to make it 20-12 at halftime. The Pioneers led by as many as nine on a three by senior
Kyli Horn, but both teams locked in defensively to keep it a low scoring affair.
Malone would go on a 19-2 run in the third quarter to break the game open and seize control. Kaufman went on a 10-0 run herself in the middle stages of the third quarter and junior
Anna Krupa hit her for a jump shot on the final possession of the period to go up 39-14.
Freshman
Kylee Bruce gave the team their largest lead of the contest at 48-18 with just over six minutes to play and the Pioneers would secure the victory in the closing minutes, 54-30 after a few baskets for Ursuline.
Malone takes a nine-day hiatus before returning to the court on Saturday, January 11 at Ohio Dominican University. That game will tip-off at 1:00 P.M.
