Women's Basketball: Pioneers Take Mayor's Cup with 15-Point Victory over Walsh

NORTH CANTON, Ohio. — The Malone University women's basketball team (15-9, 11-5 G-MAC) defeated Walsh University (5-17, 3-13 G-MAC) by a score of 69-54 on Saturday, February 17.

The Pioneers took the short trip to North Canton in hopes of completing a season sweep of the Cavaliers. The two teams locked horns back on January 11 when Malone prevailed with a 62-60 overtime victory in Osborne Hall. This time around, the Pioneers were able to breath much more easily as they left with a 15-point win.

The Pioneers jumped out to a quick lead to start the game and at the end of the first quarter, Malone led 20-14. In the second quarter, the Pioneers extended their lead to 10 points but the Cavaliers went on a 6-0 run to end the half and get themselves back into the game. Malone held a 37-33 lead at the half but built up their lead with a huge third quarter where they outscored the Cavaliers 20-8 to lead 57-41. The guests saw out the game in the fourth quarter to clinch the Mayor's Cup and their first season sweep of Walsh since the 2013 season.

The Pioneers shot 47.5% (28-59) from the field and 29.4% (5-17) from beyond the arc. Malone had 12 turnovers compared to Walsh's 13 and the Pioneers scored 16 second chance points to the Cavaliers' 10.

Inside the Box Score

Erin Kaufman had a great game for the Pioneers as she posted 20 points, six rebounds, and two assists.

Kyli Horn added 12 points, two assists, and a steal.

Aila Miller scored 11 points, had two rebounds, and one assist.

Brooklyn Troyer and Elena Oliver each added eight points.

What's Next

The Pioneers will be back in action at Osborne Hall on Thursday evening, February 22 as they host Ursuline College at 5:30 p.m.
