HILLSDALE, Mich. – The Malone University women's basketball team completed a successful weekend road trip in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) with a 68-52 triumph over Hillsdale College. The Pioneers are now 7-2 overall and 2-0 in league while the Chargers fall to 3-5 on the year and 1-1 in conference play.
Both teams struggled from the field in the opening quarter and at the first media timeout, the scoreboard read 2-2 thanks to a jumper by
Brooklyn Troyer. At the end of ten minutes, it was 9-9 with both teams under 30% shooting.
Hillsdale would claim a four-point lead at halftime thanks to a 17-13 second quarter scoring difference. Back-to-back three-point plays by
Anna Krupa and Troyer gave Malone a slight edge at 20-16, but a 10-2 run in favor of the home squad took the final four minutes of the half.
Head Coach
Selana Ickes and staff had the team ready to go in half number two and they were able to pull away from the northern natives.
Nataley Armstrong and
Kyli Horn combined for the first five points of the third quarter to put the Pioneers back in front in the first two minutes of play. Krupa, Horn and
Kylee Bruce helped the team to a game-high four makes from beyond the arc in the third period.
It was more of the same in the fourth quarter as Malone opened up a double-digit lead. A 10-0 run was capped off by a Horn jump shot. She scored all 13 of her points in the second half. At game's end, the score was 68-52.
Troyer led the Pioneers in scoring with 14 points and rebounding with 13 boards. The senior tied her own career-high set last season versus Walsh University. Along with Horn's 13 points,
