CANTON, Ohio – The Malone University women's basketball team continued their trend of quick starts as they led the entire way en route to a 75-71 victory over the visiting Kentucky Wesleyan College Panthers. Malone improves to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play. The Panthers drop to 3-3, 1-2 in G-MAC play.
The Pioneers came out firing as they began the game on a 14-0 run with a quartet of threes from
Brinn Hunt,
Anna Krupa, and
Brooklyn Troyer. The Panthers clawed back and ended the first quarter on an 11-5 run to cut the deficit to eight heading in the second quarter.
Aila Miller drilled a three early into the period as part of a 4-point play that game Malone a ten point lead. The Panthers then quickly cut the lead to two but three pointers by Krupa and
Kyli Horn gave the Pioneers some breathing room as they stretched their lead back to 31-25. The teams continued to trade blows but Malone ultimately took a 37-32 lead into the locker room.
The Pioneers dominated the third quarter as a balanced approach stymied the Panther defense.
Erin Kaufman gave Malone their biggest lead of the game when her layup put them up 55-39. Kentucky Wesleyan swished a pair of three balls to cut the deficit to ten heading into the final quarter.
The Pioneers appeared to seal the win with a pair of Krupa free throws with just over two minutes remaining, the Panther had either ideas however. A quick 6-0 run sliced the deficit to five with a minute on the clock. The Pioneers ran nearly the entirely shot clock and then Hunt nailed the coffin with her jumper, giving the Pioneers the 75-71 victory.
Horn led the Pioneers in scoring with 15 points, all from behind the arc. Over half of the Pioneers 25 made field goals came from behind the arc, as they found the mesh on 14 three point attempts. Malone shot 11 of 12 from the charity stripe.
Malone stays home as they will host Lourdes University on Friday, December 20th at 1:00 P.M.
