Pioneers Thump Cavaliers to Conclude 2024

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – In the regular season finale, the Malone University men's soccer team defeated Walsh University in a rivalry match by a score of 3-1. The Pioneers finish the 2024 campaign with a 5-9-3 overall record and 2-9-3 mark in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play. The Cavaliers fall to 4-11-3 and 3-9-2 in conference action.

All four of the goals came in the second half after a scoreless first that featured six of the seven shots from Malone. Junior Andres Eizaga found the back of the net in the 63rd minute after a failed clear by the Walsh defense.

Eizaga would extend the lead himself in the 68th minute with his second goal. After a header was saved at the net, Eizaga was there for the rebound and score after the ball deflected off the keeper.

Junior Mason Gradel put his name in the scoring column in the 86th minute to make it a 3-0 game. Gradel was all alone in the middle of the pitch and struck from just inside the 18-yard box.

The Cavaliers were able to break up the shutout with just one second remaining on the clock, but the result was already well in hand for the 3-1 final score. In goal, sophomore Griffin Owen (2-4-1) made one save on ten shots faced.

Malone goes out on a high note in 2024 despite an 11th-place finish in the league standings. The team's five wins is the most since the 2018 season.
