Women's Soccer Controls Postseason Destiny Despite Loss at #3 Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio – On Saturday night, the Malone University women's soccer team faced the #3 ranked Ashland University Eagles on the road. The Pioneers were defeated 3-0 and fall to 8-7-1 overall and 6-7-0 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) action. Ashland moves to 13-1-2 and 11-0-2 (G-MAC) with the win.

In the G-MAC standings, Malone holds the final playoff spot with one match left to play. The team is one point ahead of Ohio Dominican University. An outright win in their match at Walsh University will clinch a spot in the G-MAC Tournament. Malone can also secure a postseason berth with a tie and a Panther loss to Cedarville University or if both teams draw or lose.

The Eagles outshot the Pioneers 37-6 in total (13-4 shots on-goal). Ashland took all 13 corner kicks in the match.

The Malone defense was tested early and often and the Eagles netted the first goal in the ninth minute of play. Junior Brynn Mowrer and freshman Stephanie Tovar had shots in back-to-back minutes (28th and 29th), but the Ashland goalkeeper made saves on both attempts. Ashland doubled their lead in the 38th minute and took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

At the start of the second half, the Eagles made it a 3-0 game after a set piece was successful. Sophomore Gabrielle McCourt and senior Morgan Ross had shots on-goal in the period, but it was not enough to scratch a score across.

Sophomore Amelia Henderhan (7-7-1) made ten saves in the loss. Henderhan, senior Madison Woodward and sophomore Abby Blaz played all 90 minutes.

The final match of the regular season takes place on Wednesday, November 6 at Walsh University beginning at 5:00 P.M.
