Men's Basketball Overcomes First Half Struggles for Road Win

EDINBORO, Pa. - The Malone University men's basketball team moved to 2-2 overall with a 73-68 victory at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania (2-2) on Saturday. The Pioneers were down one at halftime behind shooting woes, but turned it on in the second to claim the non-conference win.

Malone was led by Tre Baumgardner III with 19 points and eight rebounds. Simon Blair and Ryan Bartley had 15 points each and Bartley led with nine total rebounds. Ed Wright II added 17 points. The Pioneers owned the paint to the tune of 44-24 and the defense held Edinboro to 37.5% (24-of-64) from the field.

Malone struggled out of the gates and fell behind 10-2, but were able to regroup and get back to even at 12-12 with a Blair layup. At the half, the Pioneers trailed 27-26 after going 0-for-8 from long range in the period.

Unlike the first half, Malone claimed the advantage early in the second thanks to a 7-2 run to begin the half. The scoring would continue as the Pioneers opened up their largest lead of the game at 12:05 left, 50-36 after an electric three from Baumgardner III.

After some back-and-forth, Malone got back to a 14-point lead with 4:28 remaining, but the Fighting Scots cut into that lead by 10 in the closing stages. Edinboro would not get back to within one possession as the Pioneers went on to win, 73-68.

Malone returns home on Tuesday, November 19 against Bryant & Stratton College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 P.M.
