Eagles Defeat Pioneers

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Malone University volleyball team lost their seventh straight match on Friday with a 3-0 loss at Ashland University. The Pioneers fall to 5-17 and 2-7 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). The Eagles are now 14-7 and 7-1 in the conference.

Ashland was able to throw down 17 kills in a 25-11 set one win. Freshman Audra Brandenburg had three kills to lead Malone.

The second set was even more lopsided at 25-9 in favor of the home squad. The Eagles scored the first seven points of the set and did not look back from there.

The Pioneers fought hard in set three, but ultimately came up short 25-21 to go down in straight sets. Freshman Kassidy Gorsuch had a kill to put Malone ahead 7-5 early, but Ashland would go back in front and extend their lead to 17-10. Sophomore Jaymes Gilbert came on late as the Pioneers closed the gap, but the deficit was too much to overcome.

Gilbert and sophomore Brianne Salinas had five kills each and Gilbert was in on three different blocks. Freshman Helaina Edgar recorded a team-high 12 assists and senior Gabby Pelfrey contributed with nine. Senior Macy McCauley dug out 12 opposing attacks.

It is a quick turnaround for Malone as they hit the road on Saturday, October 26 at Lake Erie College. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 P.M.
