CANTON, Ohio – In the first home match in nearly a month, the Malone University volleyball team secured a 3-0 win over Ursuline College on Tuesday. The Pioneers advance to 4-9 and are 2-2 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play. The Arrows fall to 1-14 and 1-4 inside the league.
Malone pulled away to a 25-21 victory in set one behind three aces by
Gabby Pelfrey and the team had six in total.
Emma Weirich recorded four kills as well, including a pair of kills when the team went on a 5-1 run to end the set.
The Pioneers fell behind 11-5 in the second set and ultimately fell behind 18-11 before mounting a comeback.
Grace Rosko sparked a 10-1 run for the home squad.
Jaymes Gilbert and
Kassidy Gorsuch were a force upfront to shut down the opposing offense. The set required an extra point, but a kill by
Brianne Salinas and ace from
Mallory Meinen concluded a 26-24 set win.
Malone came alive in the third set and rolled to a 25-15 triumph. Nine of the final ten points in the match went to the Pioneers and
Annika Nichols wrapped up the win with a kill.
The offense was led by Pelfrey and Gilbert with four aces apiece and Gorsuch recorded a team-high eight kills. Pelfrey (16) and Meinen (12) paced the offense in assists.
Macy McCauley and Weirich anchored the defense with double-digit dig totals at 14 and 11. Gilbert was a part of four blocks (one solo).
The Pioneers remain at home for their annual Homecoming and Family Weekend match on Friday, October 4 at 7:00 P.M. versus Ashland University.
