Softball Takes Two Against Lake Erie on Saturday

CANTON – The Malone University softball team welcomed the Lake Erie College Storm for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers had the only run in game one. Game two saw Malone hold off a Storm comeback attempt for the 7-5 victory and the doubleheader sweep.

THE ESSENTIALS
  • Game One: Malone University Pioneers 1 – Lake Erie College Storm 0
  • Game Two: Malone University Pioneers 7 – Lake Erie College Storm 5
  • Records: Malone (11-21, 5-11 G-MAC) | Lake Erie (8-24, 3-13 G-MAC)
  • Location: Canton, Ohio | Pioneer Softball Field

GAME ONE
The first game in the doubleheader was a defensive battle. Jensen Miller got the start in the circle for the Pioneers. She allowed just two hits and struck out five Storm batters in her seven innings of work.

The Storm opened the game by getting their first batter on base with a walk, but the Pioneers were able to retire the next three. In the bottom of the first inning, the Pioneers got their first batter, Madi Pukansky, on base with a single to center field but she was left stranded on base as well.

The defensive battle continued until the bottom of the fifth. Malone was able to capitalize on some errors by the Storm and Hannah Offenberger was able to cross home plate for the only run of the game.

GAME TWO
As Elizabeth Dyke got the start for game two, the Pioneers retired the side to open the game. Malone scored four in the first inning. Madi Pukansky, Taylor Kern, Karlie Duvall, Amber Miller, and Hannah Offenberger all walked to get on base.

Reagan Smith singled to get the first hit of the game and earn an RBI. Amber Burick's single to left field allowed Miller to score for the final run of the inning.

The Pioneers defense continued as they allowed just one Storm player to reach base in the next two innings.

Miller led off the bottom of the third inning with a triple and Smith's double brought Miller home to add to the lead. The next inning Lake Erie was able to put a run on the board.

In the top of the sixth, the Storm added another run. However, the Pioneers were able to add two more runs as Kern doubled to center field to send both Burick and Leah Bova home.

The Storm mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh. After getting the bases loaded, Lake Erie's Peyton Powers got caught trying to stretch a double into a triple. While Malone got the out at third, all three base runners were able to score to get the Storm within two of the home team.

The Malone bullpen was able to work out of a one-out jam to close out the game with the doubleheader sweep.
