Pioneers Drop Home Opener Doubleheader to Trojans

CANTON – After having the doubleheader pushed from Friday due to the Ohio spring weather, the Malone University softball team had their home opener and opened conference play against the Trevecca Nazarene University Trojans on Sunday afternoon.

TNU was tied as the preseason favorite in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) and showed their power as they won the first game by a score of 4-0 and then spoiled the Pioneers' home opener with a score of 12-1 in just five innings in the second game.

THE ESSENTIALS
  • Game 1: Trevecca Nazarene University Trojans 4 – Malone University Pioneers 0
  • Game 2: Trevecca Nazarene University Trojans 12 – Malone University Pioneers 1
  • Records: Malone (6-12, 0-2 G-MAC) | Trevecca (18-8, 4-0 G-MAC)
  • Location: Canton, Ohio | Pioneer Softball Field

GAME ONE
Both teams were able to get players aboard the bases in the opening inning, but neither team was able to score.

In the top of the third, the Trojans got three runs.

When the inning switched to the Pioneers, Taylor Kern and Halyn Cawthorne both singled, in what looked like the beginning of a two out rally, but both were stranded.

The Pioneers defensive efforts held the Trojans to just one more run in the top of the fourth inning, but were unable to come up with momentum at the plate for the remainder of the game.

Jensen Miller pitched all seven innings and was on target most of the afternoon as she only walked two Trevecca players.

GAME TWO
Alayna Meadows got the start in the circle for the second game before Cawthorne took over as relief in the third inning of the five inning affair.

Trevecca scored two runs before the first out was recorded with a home run. They would score multiple runs in each of their innings.

Madi Pukansky had the Pioneers' first hit of the game with a double to left-center field in the bottom of the second but was unable to get back home.

Cawthorne hit the ball into left field early in the fourth inning to send Taylor Kern to third, who had reached base on a Trojan error.  Amber Miller doubled to left field to bring home Kern and the Pioneers only run of the afternoon.

The bottom of the fifth inning saw Reagan Smith record another Malone hit to left field and advance to second when Sydney Seaman was walked but unfortunately, they were left on base as the game ended with Trevecca up 12-1.
