MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Malone University men's basketball team was on the road at the newest member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) on Saturday.
The Pioneers traveled to Northwood University, and nearly led the game wire to wire en route to an 84-54 win.
THE ESSENTIALS
- Final Score: Malone University Pioneers 84 - Northwood University 54
- Records: Malone (13-7, 8-6 G-MAC) | Northwood (2-21, 2-13 G-MAC)
- Location: Midland, Michigan | E.W. Bennett Sports Center
THE GAME
Malone shot nearly 50% from the field for the entire game, but it was really the hot shooting from beyond the three-point arc that helped the Pioneers pull away from the Timberwolves in the second half.
The second-half effort was actually sparked by a strong end to the first half.
The game was tied at 27-27 with just 3:39 remaining in the opening period, but Malone closed the half on a 9-2 run.
The run was sparked by a layup from
Simon Blair, and capped off with a
Bo Myers triple to send the teams to the break with Malone up 36-29.
Northwood scored the opening three points of the second-half, but it took just four minutes for the Pioneers to open up their first double-digit lead.
Two three-pointers from
Justin Miller, and another long-range basket by Myers had Malone ahead 47-35 at the first media stoppage of the half.
That twelve-point advantage quickly grew to 59-27 by the 12:30 mark, and the Pioneers never looked back down the stretch to earn the 84-54 win.
DETAILS
- Malone's defense forced Northwood into 17 turnovers. That lead to 29 points on the other end of the floor, 7 of them coming via the fastbreak.
- The Pioneers outrebounded the Timberwolves 41-24. Malone had 16 offensive rebounds and 17 second-chance points.
- Bo Myers led all scorers in the game with 20 points. He was 4-7 from three-point territory.
- Justin Miller finished with 14 points, and tied a career-high with 10 assists. That is Miller's second double-double effort of the season. The 14 points also allowed him to eclipse the 1,000 point mark for his Malone University career.
