Pioneers Drop Mayors' Cup in Front of Capacity Crowd at Osborne Hall

CANTON -- Midway through the first half, the sign on the front doors of Osborne Hall read 'Sold Out Due to Capacity.' Unfortunately, the standing room only crowd had to watch the Walsh University Cavaliers retain the Mayors' Cup in the 59th edition of the annual rivalry battle.

The Cavaliers led 34-29 at the halftime break, and outscored the Pioneers by nine in the second half to come away with the 74-60 win.

THE ESSENTIALS
  • Final Score: Walsh University Cavaliers 74 - Malone University Pioneers 60
  • Records: Walsh (9-6, 6-2 G-MAC) | Malone (10-4, 5-3 G-MAC)
  • Location: Canton, Ohio | Osborne Hall
THE GAME
Malone opened up the game with three straight points on an Elijah Hinton field goal and a Simon Blair free throw.

A couple of possessions later Caleb Conard gave the Pioneers, what would turn out to be, their largest lead of the game with a bucket to make it 8-4 Malone with 14:20 left in the first half.

Walsh stayed within just one or two possessions of Malone for much of the first half, but a late run by the Cavaliers helped them actually carry a lead into halftime.

WU answered another Conard basket with a three-pointer on the other end to take a 26-25 lead with just over three minutes to play in the half. Unfortunately Malone never led again the rest of the night.

By the halftime break Walsh had stretched their lead out to 34-29.

Coming out of the locker room the Cavaliers opened the half on a 12-0 run. Malone's first bucket of the second half did not come until the 16:01 mark when Justin Miller ended the scoring drought.

The Walsh lead grew as large as 22 points (61-39 with 9:15 to play) before the Pioneers made a final run.

With the Cavaliers leading 66-49, and just 4:59 left in the game, Malone rattled off seven unanswered points in the span of ninety seconds to make it a 10-point game with over two minutes still to play.

Unfortunately Malone was never able to get within real striking distance, and Walsh was able to hang on and escape Osborne Hall with the 74-60 win.

DETAILS
  • Bo Myers led Malone with 16 points and 10 rebounds. That is his fourth double-double performance of the season.
