TIFFIN, Ohio -- The Malone University softball team traveled to Tiffin University on Friday afternoon for a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) doubleheader.
The Dragons (19-23, 8-8 G-MAC) won the opener over the Pioneers (6-18, 2-11 G-MAC) via the run-rule 10-2 in six innings.
Tiffin then took the second game by a final score of 4-0 to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Game 1 Highlights
The Dragons opened up the scoring with a run on a RBI double in the bottom of the first.
The Pioneers were able to get that run right back in the second however.
Lauren Bennett drew a leadoff walk. Later on in the inning she came around to score on a RBI single by
Lexi Betz to tie the game at 1-1.
Unfortunately Tiffin scored the next seven runs of the game unanswered, including five runs on five hits and two MU errors in the fifth.
Elizabeth Dyke singled home Bennett in the top of the sixth, but the Dragons responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to pick up the 10-2 run-rule victory.
Game 2 Highlights
Jensen Miller, anchored by solid defensive play in the field, kept Tiffin's bats off balance for much of the second game.
Unfortunately Malone's offense struggled as well.
The Dragons scored first with a RBI single in the bottom of the first, but both teams went scoreless over the next three innings.
TU added three more runs to their tally in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead.
The Pioneers best chance at a run came in the sixth inning when they had two runners on, including a runner at third. Tiffin was able to get out of the jam however to keep Malone scoreless.
Ultimately the Dragons were able to complete the doubleheader sweep of the Pioneers with the 4-0 shutout win.
PIONEER POINTS
- Elizabeth Dyke and Erika Johnson each had three hits in the doubleheader for Malone. Dyke had one of the team's two RBIs on the afternoon.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Malone returns home tomorrow afternoon to host a G-MAC doubleheader with crosstown rival Walsh University.
First pitch in game one is set for 1:00 p.m.
