CANTON -- The Malone University men's basketball team welcomed Kentucky Wesleyan College to Osborne Hall on Thursday night for a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) showdown.
The Pioneers used a record-breaking performance in shooting beyond the arc to easily dispatch of the visiting Panthers by a final score of 104-71.
THE ESSENTIALS
- Final Score: Malone University Pioneers 104 - Kentucky Wesleyan College Panthers 71
- Records: Malone (6-2, 3-1 G-MAC) | Kentucky Wesleyan (5-4, 2-1 G-MAC)
- Location: Canton, Ohio | Osborne Hall
THE GAME
Kentucky Wesleyan opened up the scoring on the night with a two-point basket.
Malone countered with a bucket by
Simon Blair, and then
Levi Seiler put the Pioneers up 4-2 just outside the first minute of play. Malone never trailed again.
Less than four minutes into the game
Justin Miller connected on his first, of what would be eight three-pointers, on the night.
A couple of possessions later Miller again hit from long range. He was fouled on the shot, and completed the four-point play at the free throw line to give the Pioneers their first double-digit lead of the evening.
Malone added eight more three-pointers to their total in the first half, as KWC seemingly had no answer for the Pioneers offense.
Terrance Broughton got in on the long-range barrage late in the opening half. He connected from downtown three consecutive times to help give Malone a 55-28 halftime lead.
The Panthers opened up the second-half strong, but the huge first-half effort by Malone left little doubt about the final outcome of the game.
Kentucky Wesleyan was only able to get as close as 63-43 because the Pioneers were able to match them basket for basket.
Late in the second-half
Brady Moore drilled a three-pointer to put Malone up 99-63 and tie the school record for three-pointers made in a game.
Twenty seconds later
Caleb Conard helped etch the 2022-23 version of the Pioneers into the school record books with his second three-pointer, and the team's 21st of the contest.
The 21 made triples goes down as the second-most all-time by a G-MAC institution in a single game, and played a huge role in what was ultimately a 104-71 Pioneer win.
