INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Malone University women's basketball team opened the 2022-2023 season with a win over the University of Indianapolis on Friday night.
The freshman heavy Pioneers scored the first six points unanswered. Halfway through the second quarter the Pioneers gained the advantage and would retain the lead in route to an 88-82 victory over the Greyhounds.

THE GAME
Freshman Erin Kaufman would score on the opening possession and Alexis Hutchison would score twice to give the Pioneers an opening 6-0 lead. As the first quarter ended, Emma Kallas would score in the paint to tie the game at 19.
As the Greyhounds stayed with the Pioneers, they gained the lead on a the first shot of a pair of two attempts from the line. Brooklyn Troyer would get the rebound and send it to Kyli Horn for the Pioneers to quickly regain the lead. UIndy would not hold a lead for the rest of the game but did keep it close.
Hutchison sank a shot from beyond the arc with under a minute to go in the first half to give Malone their largest lead of the night at 41-30.
UIndy would come out of the halftime locker room with some momentum as they outscored the visitors 28-23 to cut the lead to just two points.
On the first possession for the final period, Hutchison would score her second and last three-pointer of the night. Kallas would follow up with a layup after a Greyhound turnover.
With 7:31 left on the clock, Kacilyn Krebs would give UIndy their last offensive push for the win with a three-pointer that tied the game at 71. The Pioneers roared offensively in response as Kaufman, Horn, and Hutchison would combine for 10 unanswered.
The Greyhounds would cut the lead to two points with under a minute to play but Malone once again responded. Freshman Brinn Hunt would close the game with a free throw to give the Pioneers the opening day win.
DETAILS
Senior Alexis Hutchison led all scorers with her career-high 33 points. She went a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe and had a game-high 6 steals.
Erin Kaufman scored 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for a double-double in her Pioneer debut.
Kyli Horn and Brinn Hunt also both scored in double digits. Horn shot 4-8 from beyond the arc and Hunt had three treys in her Malone debut.
As a team, the Pioneers scored 42 points in the paint and had 27 points off turnovers. The second quarter was the best period for the offense as they shot 61.5% from the floor and 4-6 from three-point range.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Pioneers continue their opening weekend road trip as they travel to Detroit, Michigan to face Wayne State University. The November 13 game will tip off at 1:00pm on Sunday afternoon.
