HILLSDALE, Mich. -- On Saturday afternoon the Malone University women's basketball team traveled to Michigan to begin a short road stint, beginning with a game against the Hillsdale College Chargers.
Hillsdale (9-5, 6-2 G-MAC) built up a 50-34 lead at halftime, and then continued to overpower the Pioneers (8-6, 4-4 G-MAC) during the rest of the second half to secure a 91-61 victory.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Malone opened up the scoring with a basket by
Kelsey Swihart.
The two sides continued to trade baskets for the majority of the first quarter, but the Pioneers grabbed a 23-21 lead after
Nikki Weber made good on a three-pointer near the end of the first quarter.
Holly Groff came away with a layup that gave Malone a 27-24 lead, their largest lead of the afternoon.
The Chargers answered back with a 10-0 run that put them up 34-27.
Hillsdale continued to build upon their big run, and they held a 50-34 lead back to the halftime locker room.
The Chargers reestablished their dominance during the beginning of the third quarter and never backed off.
The Pioneers fought to make a comeback effort to decrease Hillsdale's lead to 66-48 on a 9-0 run.
However, the Chargers pulled away down the stretch to secure the 91-61 victory.
PIONEER POINTS
- Robin Campbell led Malone's offense for the second consecutive night. She finished 4-6 from the field, and was 4-4 from the free throw line.
- Holly Groff added 11 points for the Pioneers.
- Alexis Hutchison (11) and Emma Kallas (10) also scored in the double-digits for the Pioneers. Kallas had a season-high two steals.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Malone will continue the short road stint as they travel to Columbus, Ohio for a match up against Ohio Dominican University on Thursday, January 13th. Tip-off at Alumni Hall is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
