Women's Soccer Falls to Cedarville 2-1 in the G-MAC Semifinals

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- On Friday night, the Malone University women's soccer team took on the No. 3 seeded Cedarville University Yellow Jackets in the semifinal found of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.

Both sides were able to get a goal in the first half, but it was a 62nd minute goal from the Yellow Jackets that allowed Cedarville to advance to the semifinals with a 2-1 victory.

The Pioneers end the 2020-21 championship season with a 5-6-2 mark overall. Cedarville improves to 8-2-1.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The Yellow Jackets opened up the scoring with a goal off of a free kick in the 6th minute.

Malone's defense, anchored by the reigning G-MAC Defensive Player of the Week, Jessica Morgan locked down the Cedarville offense for the rest of the half. Morgan made several outstanding saves to prevent the Jackets from adding to their total.

One of those saves led to a counterattack opportunity for Malone that the Pioneers capitalized on.

In the 32nd minute Amanda Kinsey found the back of the net for the equalizer and her first goal of the season.

Neither team scored over the final 13 minutes of the half, and the match remained deadlocked at 1-1 at the break.

After several minutes of scoreless action early in the second half the Yellow Jackets broke through again for a go-ahead goal in the 62nd minute.

Ten minutes later the Pioneers had an outstanding look at their second goal, but Madeline Ault's attempt went just outside the top left corner of the goal.

Malone's defense continued to turn away the Cedarville chances, but unfortunately could not capitalize themselves as the Jackets held on for the 2-1 win.

PIONEER POINTS
  • Kinsey's goal makes her the eighth different Pioneer to score a goal this season.

  • Defensively Morgan finished with five saves.

  • Madeline Ault, who earlier this week was named to the G-MAC All-Conference Team, led the Pioneers with three shots including two on goal.
