FINDLAY, Ohio -- The Malone University women's soccer team opened up the Great Midwest Athletic Conference portion of their 2020-21 championship season on Saturday afternoon with a trip to the University of Findlay.
The Oilers (1-0, 1-0 G-MAC) showed why they were chosen as the preseason favorites in the conference with a 4-0 win over the Pioneers (1-1, 0-1 G-MAC).
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Findlay had the first good offensive opportunity of the match, and quickly made the most of it with a goal just over three minutes into play.
The Pioneers had a quick counter though, as
Keeley Malley broke free for a shot. Unfortunately the Oiler keeper made the save.
Just over two minutes after the first goal Findlay got on the board again to make it 2-0.
Malone had another really strong opportunity in the 14th minute, but Findlay's defense turned away the attempt by
Sally Culig.
The Oilers controlled possession for the most of the first half as Malone was unable to get much going on the offensive end. Findlay broke through again late in the half for another goal to take a 3-0 advantage to the break.
It was Malone who had the first good look of the second half, but this time
Amanda Kinsey's strike was just left of the frame.
Findlay countered with another goal, this time in the 51st minute, to push their lead out to 4-0.
The Pioneers had a couple of other opportunities late, but both times
Alexa Langenfeld was turned away by the Oiler defense.
PIONEER POINTS
-
Alexis Huscroft was asked to step up and serve as the team's keeper for the second consecutive game. This time she made a career-high four saves.
-
Although the Findlay defense made things difficult all afternoon long, the Pioneers were once again accurate with the opportunites they did have. Four of the team's six shots were on goal. So far this season Malone has put 22 of their 32 shots on frame.
