Pioneers Comeback Effort Against Slippery Rock Falls Short

CANTON, Ohio -- The Malone University women's basketball team continued their season on Saturday afternoon by hosting Slippery Rock University. 

The Rock (3-1, 0-0 PSAC) jumped out to an 41-25 lead after the first half, and then the Pioneers (3-1, 0-0 G-MAC) fought to make a comeback during the second half, but fell short to a 59-69 lost.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Robin Campbell opened up the scoring with a three-pointer, and a jumper after grabbing a steal to give Malone a 5-0 lead.

Jamiyah Johnson answered back with eight straight points that initiated an 19-2 run by Slippery Rock to made it 19-7.

Robin Campbell distributed an assist to Emma Kallas that gave her the opportunity to make a buzzer-beater jumper in the paint that ended the Rock's huge run to make it 25-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Daeja Quick dispersed an assist to Anyah Curd that allowed her to make a three-pointer to open up the second quarter that expanded Slippery Rock's lead to 28-12.

Daeja Quick made a nice spin move on a defender and short after, she made a jumper in the paint with 04:04 left in the second quarter that contributed to a 10-6 run to gave the Rock a 38-18 lead. 

Going into locker room at the end of the second quarter, Slippery Rock led the Pioneers 41-25.

With 07:52 in the third quarter, Jamiyah Johnson distributed an assist to Kennedy Middleton that allowed her to make a layup in the paint make the score 43-26.

Emma Kallas made a steal that gave Madison Hunter the opportunity to make a fast break layup to cap off a 7-0 run made by the Pioneers to decrease The Rock's lead to 43-33 with 06:26 left in the third quarter. 

03:52 left in the third quarter, Robin Campbell dispersed an assist to Nikki Webber that allowed her to make a jumper in the paint that diminished Slippery Rock's double digit lead to 45-38.

With four seconds left in the third quarter, Daeja Quick made a pull-up three-point jumper that brought back the Rock to a double digit lead at 54-44.

With 05:27 left in the fourth quarter, Kyli Horn converted on an and-one after making a layup in the paint that was assisted by Robin Campbell. That bucket cut down Slippery Rock's lead to 60-52.

Kennedy Middleton made a layup in the paint with 03:54 that stopped the Pioneers run and that increased the Rock's lead to 64-53.

01:19 into the fourth quarter, Daeja Quick put back her own shot to further expand Slippery Rock's lead to 68-57.

Even though Malone played more efficiently in the second half, they unfortunately did not have enough time to make a comeback. The Pioneers lost 69-59 to The Rock.

PIONEER POINTS
  • Slippery Rock shot 27-60 (45%) from the field, 3-13 (23.1%) from beyond the arc, and 12-19 (63.2%) from the free throw line. Malone shot 20-62 (32.3%) from the field, 5-32 (15.6%) from deep, and 14-20 (70%) from the foul line. 
  • Holly Groff led the Pioneers with 15 points. She was 5-16 from the field, including 2-10 from three-point range.
  • Kyli Horn (13) and Emma Kallas (10) rounded out the double-digit scorers for Malone.
  • The Pioneers dominated in fast break points, outscoring The Rock 17-7.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Malone is back at home on Wednesday, November 24, and they will be hosting Clarion University. Tip off from Osborne Hall is set for 2:00 p.m.
