Groff, Campbell Lead Malone Past Lindenwood

CANTON, Ohio -- On Saturday afternoon the Malone University women's basketball team hosted the Lindenwood University Lions.

The Pioneers (2-0. 0-0 G-MAC) were tied with the Lions (0-2, 0-0 GLVC) after the first quarter, but Malone managed to hold a comfortable lead the rest of the game. 

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Gracie Neff converted a layup in the paint that contributed to the Lion's 11-6 lead with 05:46 left in the first quarter.

With 02:04 left in the first quarter, Kelsey Swihart made an exceptional steal that led to a made jumper by her. Swihart's jump shot allowed the Pioneers to tie the game up at 13-13.

Malone and Lindenwood were tied at 17-17 at the end of the first quarter.

In the middle of the second quarter, Nikki Webber distributed a nice assist to Brooklyn Troyer who capped off a nice three-pointer to extend the Pioneer's lead to 29-23.

Holly Groff grabbed a steal with eight seconds left in the second quarter and was able to knock a fastbreak jumper that gave Malone a 43-33 lead heading into halftime. 

Halfway into the third quarter, Robin Campbell made a steal that led to a made jumper by Alexis Hutchinson. That made bucket increased the Pioneer's lead to 57-42. 

With 02:30 left in the third quarter, Julia Ruzevich made a layup after she got her own rebound. Her bucket contributed to a seven point run by Lindenwood that cut into Malone's 57-49 lead.

At the end of the third quarter, the Pionners led 61-51.

03:11 into the fourth quarter, Robin Campbell dished out an assist to Holly Groff for a three-pointer that stretched out Malone's lead to 69-53.

With 03:30 left in the game, Robin Campbell capped off an and-one after getting fouled on a jumper that she made that helped the Pioneers increased the Pioneer's lead to 79-62.

In the end, Malone pulled away for a 88-69 victory.

PIONEER POINTS
  • Holly Groff finished with a team-high 24 points. She was 9-12 from the field, 2-4 from beyond the arc, and 4-4 from the foul-line.
  • Robin Campbell (21), Emma Kallas (11), and Alexis Hutchison (10) all topped the double-digit point mark.

  • Kallas led the team with five rebounds and Campbell had a team-high 6 assists.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Pioneers will host the Wheeling University Cardinals on Wednesday, November 17. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
