NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Malone University volleyball team capped off this weekend's Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) road trip with a match at Trevecca Nazarene University on Saturday.
Unfortunately for Malone, the Trojans (15-8, 6-5 G-MAC) cruised to a 3-0 win over the Pioneers (8-15, 3-8) by set scores of 25-17, 25-18, and 25-23.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Trevecca's efficient offensive attack allowed the Trojans to distance themselves from Malone in the first set.
TU went ahead 16-9 midway through, and then held off a Pioneer comeback attempt late.
Back-to-back attack errors by the Trojans allowed Malone to cut the deficit down to 23-17. Unfortunately Trevecca put down kills on the next two points to pick up the 25-17 win.
The Trojans' defense limited Malone to just nine kills in the opening set on a .098 attack percentage.
Trevecca jumped out to an early lead again in set two, this time going ahead 15-7.
Four straight Pioneer points, capped off by an emphatic block from
Kristen Hankins, made it 15-11.
Unfortunately Malone could not get past that four point barrier. Every time that the Pioneers looked to make a run Trevecca was able to answer.
In the end the Trojans pulled out a 25-18 set two win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
MU went ahead early in the third set when an
Anna Mallette kill made it 6-4 in favor of the Pioneers.
Trevecca fought back, and eventually built up a 14-10 lead, but Malone rallied.
Gabby Pelfrey's ace capped off a three-point run that cut it to 14-13.
The Trojans ran out to a 19-13 lead late, but yet again Malone did not fold.
MU won six out of the next nine points to make it 22-19, but unfortunately could not complete the comeback.
The Pioneers got the lead down to 24-23, but Trevecca finished off the sweep with a kill on the final point of the match.
PIONEER POINTS
- After being held somewhat in check in the team's last two matches, Anna Mallette put down double-digit kills again. The junior led Malone with 11, and pushed her season total out to 231.
- Kristen Hankins was a force on the defensive side of the net. Her season-high nine total blocks, included three solo blocks.
