CANTON, Ohio -- In a last minute change to their schedule, the Malone University women's basketball team was back in action on Thursday afternoon for a Great Midwest Athletic Conference matchup at home against Lake Erie College.
The Pioneers (2-4, 2-4 G-MAC) controlled the game, seemingly from the opening tip, scoring at a blistering pace all afternoon.
Malone built up a 50-35 lead at halftime, and absolutely ran away from the Storm (0-1, 0-1 G-MAC) in the second half en route to a 112-63 win.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Paced by six early points from
Emma Kallas, Malone opened up the game on a 9-0 run. The Storm scored their first basket of the season, a three pointer at the 8:07 mark, but the Pioneers quickly answered with a
Nikki Weber three-pointer and a pair of
Robin Campbell free throws to grab their first double-digit lead of the contest.
Lake Erie only cut that lead down to single digits once. They got as close as 16-8 midway through the opening quarter before Malone really took control.
The Pioneers outscored the Storm 19-8 over the final five minutes of the quarter to grab a commanding 35-16 lead.
The two teams traded baskets for much of the early part of the quarter. It was Lake Erie who actually made a run cutting the Malone lead down to 43-32 with 3:32 remaining to play in the half, but
Lexi Manos scored the final five points of the half for the Pioneers to help give Malone a 50-35 lead at the break.
In the third quarter the Pioneers put on an offensive clinic. They outscored the Storm 40-11 in the quarter with 24 of those points coming from behind the three-point arc.
