Malone Baseball Concludes Ohio Valley Series with Win, Pioneers to Visit Walsh Tuesday

The Malone University baseball team wrapped its four-game series with Ohio Valley University on Monday afternoon in Parkersburg, West Virginia with a 7-2 victory over the Fighting Scots. Monday's game was the conclusion of a suspended contest from Saturday, which was halted in the third inning by rain. With the win, Malone ultimately earned a 2-2 split in the series, which spanned a stretch of five days.

The Pioneers, who remain in first place in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, are 31-13 on the season and 20-6 in G-MAC play. Ohio Valley falls to 8-30 overall, 8-16 in G-MAC play.

Recap
In the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday, the Pioneers scored four runs in the first inning and still led 4-0 when heavy rains halted the game in the top of the third. An errant throw on a steal attempt allowed the first run to score, a balk plated the second. An RBI single by Trey Davis made it 3-0 before Austin White took home on a first-and-third double steal attempt to give Malone a 4-0 advantage.Of Malone's seven runs in the game, only one came via an RBI.

When the two teams resumed play on Monday, it was all zeros until Ohio Valley doubled in a run off of Pioneer starter Tommy Walker in the bottom of the seventh. Walker pitched two scoreless innings on Saturday and then bounced back to throw four more scoreless before surrendering the first OVU run. The junior righty would eventually go eight-plus innings on 133 pitches, allowing just two runs while recording four strikeouts as he improved to 4-0 on the season.

Ahead 4-1 in the top of the ninth, the Pioneers scored three runs on a bases-loaded wild pitch followed by a passed ball and then an Ohio Valley fielding error to make it a 7-1 contest. In the bottom of the ninth, the first three OVU batters reached against Walker, resulting in a run and a call to the bullpen. In a non-save situation, closer Clay Cooper came on to retire the final three batters in order, including two on strikeouts, to keep the 7-2 triumph intact.

The Pioneers collected seven hits in the victory including two apiece from Turner Hill and Clay Wisner. Hill, Tyson Gingerich, and Matt Noel each doubled while Zach Mottice walked twice and scored twice.
