Men's Soccer Falls at Lake Erie as 2019 Season Comes to an End

The Malone University men's soccer team lost to the number one seed and nationally-ranked Lake Erie College 3-0 on Saturday night in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals.

The Pioneers finish their season with a record of 4-7-6 overall and 3-6-5 in the G-MAC. NCAA Division II number four ranked Lake Erie will advance to Roger Glass Stadium in Dayton, Ohio, next weekend to play the Tiffin University Dragons in the G-MAC Tournament Semifinals.

Christopher Mally started the game with a shot at one of the nation's best keepers in Tom John of the Storm in the second minute of play, but he was able to make a save and the defense would stifle the Pioneers for the rest of the night. It would be the only shot Malone mustered in the first half.

Reigning G-MAC Offensive Player of the Week Jonathon Carr continued his dominance in conference of late and netted a goal just five minutes into the match to give Lake Erie a 1-0 lead. Luca Ragagnin assisted on the play after a long cross from the far side of the pitch.

The Storm fired off six more shots in the half, but Pioneers goalie Alexandre Durand made two saves and received help from the top woodwork to keep the deficit at 1-0.

In the 75th and 82nd minutes, the Storm put the game to rest with back-to-back scores that allowed the team to prepare to celebrate.

Tom Akinola converted the first of two late goals off of a pass from Tom Pearson, this time from the near side to the middle of the field.

Ameer Saade scored to seal the win at 3-0 with a low shot that snuck passed the keeper.

Gino Finelli took two shots in a late rally attempt, but it was not enough as one-loss Lake Erie moves on.

Durand made five saves in net.
