The Malone University women's basketball team raced out to a 28-point halftime lead and never looked back in an 85-66 win over a scrappy Salem University outfit in the Pioneers' home opener Wednesday night in Osborne Hall. With the win, Malone improved to 2-1 on the season.

Malone opened the contest on a 13-2 run over the first six-and-a-half minutes as back-to-back three-pointers from
Mikayla Poole put the Pioneers up 11. The margin was 10 at the end of the first quarter with the home team leading 19-9.
Facing a Tiger defense which pressed all evening and ran in and out five subs every two minutes, Malone stepped on the gas and put up 30 points in the second period. The 30 points tied for the second-most the Pioneers have scored in a quarter in the last three seasons. Sophomore
Robin Campbell tallied 14 of the 30 points and had 17 total by halftime.
Malone went to the lockerroom ahead 49-21 and saw its lead peak at 29 points four times in the third quarter, including a final time at 59-30 six minutes into the frame. Over the next 10 minutes of game time, Salem continued to put relentless pressure on the Pioneers and trimmed the deficit to as low as 13 points (72-59) with four minutes to play. Nikki Weber kept the Tigers caged, however, as Malone would hold on for the 85-66 triumph.

- The Tigers forced 23 Malone turnovers, including 12 steals, and outscored MU 26-12 in points off of turnovers and 40-22 in the paint.
- The Pioneers outrebounded their opponents 46-37 and shared the basketball efficiently to the tune of 22 assists on 27 made baskets.

- Robin Campbell was held scoreless in the second half, but finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, six assists, two steals, and two blocks in a solid all-around effort.
- Classmate Mikayla Poole tallied a career-high 15 points on perfect shooting (5-5 FG, 3-3 3PT, 2-2 FT) over 18 minutes off of the bench.
- Holly Groff recorded 14 points, four boards, and three assists.
- Senior Ellen Doyle contributed 10 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
- Freshman Alexis Hutchison registered nine points, three assists, and three swipes.
- Fellow frosh Emma Kallas added eight points and four boards
Tiger Highlights
- Nia Bishop totaled a team-high 17 points, six rebounds, and five steals
- Alicia Smith (3-4 3PT) added 14 points off of the bench.
