The Malone University men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against Cedarville University on Thursday afternoon.
Patrick Alvarez scored the game-tying goal in the 88th minute to send the game into overtime, where neither team was able to prevail. For Cedarville, it is their fifth 1-1 draw of the season and it is Malone's third game in 2019 with a final score of 1-1.
Â
The Pioneers move to 4-5-3 on the season, 3-5-2 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, and have accumulated 11 points in the conference table. Cedarville continues to gain points, as they are 7-1-6 overall and 4-1-5 in G-MAC play. The Yellow Jackets have accumulated 17 points and sit third in the conference standings.
Â
Cedarville came out of the gates and attempted a few early shots, but the Pioneers were able to keep the offensive attack at bay. Goalkeeper
Alexandre Durand made three of his five saves for the game in the first 20 minutes of play.
Â
Both teams went quiet offensively for the next portion of the first half, until Sammy Kilimann broke through in the 39th minute for a goal to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.
Â
Terry McBride headed a free ball to Kilimann inside the box and he beat the keeper with a low line drive to the left side of the net. The goal kept Cedarville's streak alive, as the Yellow Jackets have scored at least one goal in 16 straight matches, dating back to 2018.
Â
At the half, Cedarville outshot Malone 7-3 and had four corner kicks compared to one for the Pioneers.
Â
In the second half, the Pioneers did a solid job of getting the ball into the box via long passes or corner kicks, but were unsuccessful in netting a goal. Deep in the closing minutes of the contest, Malone would strike.
Â
Jamal Rasheed sent a free kick into the box, where the team's leading goal scorer in
Nathan McFeaters would head the ball across to
Patrick Alvarez. Alvarez stunned the defense with a rocket to the top right corner of the net. A goal in the 88th minute is the latest the Pioneers have scored this season.
Â
The first overtime period saw only one shot by the Yellow Jackets, a high and wide shot from Pedro Alvares.
Â
In the second overtime, Cedarville attempted three shots in the box that were all blocked in the 102nd minute. The Yellow Jackets had one more shot that was saved by a diving Durand with the clock winding down to end the game and keep it at a 1-1 draw.
Â
Patrick Alvarez took six of the 10 Pioneer shots on the day.
Jonathan Dendinger,
Evan Dekker,
Gino Finelli and
Jake Martell recorded one shot apiece.
Â
Jamal Rasheed and
Nathan McFeaters each recorded their first assist of the season on the Alvarez goal.
Â
The Pioneers are back in action this Saturday, October 26 at 5 pm on the road against the Ohio Dominican Panthers.
