Game Recap: Baseball |

Malone Splits with Hillsdale in G-MAC North Doubleheader

The Malone University baseball team split two games with Hillsdale College Sunday afternoon at Jackson High School in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) North Division twinbill. The Pioneers earned a 4-1 triumph in the seven-inning opener before being shutout 7-0 in the nine-inning finale. Through 31 games this season, Malone is now 21-10 overall and 11-4 in conference. The Chargers, meanwhile, are now 15-17 overall and 12-3 in G-MAC play.

Game One Recap
The Pioneers went ahead in the bottom of the second when Jacob Mottice delivered a two-out single to left to give Malone a 1-0 lead. Hillsdale later tied the game with a tally in the top of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth, Mottice's squeeze bunt put Malone back in front 2-1, giving starting pitcher Eric Mullet all the run support he would need. The Pioneers tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Austin White and an RBI single from first baseman Todd Ropp.

Mullet allowed just one run over six innings before giving way to the bullpen in the top of the seventh. The sophomore righty collected six strikeouts as he improved to 4-0 on the year. Senior lefthander Jordan Yoder worked a scoreless seventh inning to earn his second save of the season.

Offensively, Turner Hill, Austin White, and Todd Ropp all finished with two hits apiece.

Game Two Recap
Turner Hill collected two of Malone's four hits in the nightcap as the Pioneers were shut out for the first time all season. Hillsdale starting pitcher Andrew Verbrugge (3-4) was dominant, striking out seven in a complete game effort.

A solo homer by Hillsdale catcher Steven Ring against Malone starter Joshua Hurford (3-2) in the top of the first and an unearned run in the top of the second gave the Chargers a 2-0 lead. Hillsdale then got through for four runs in the top of the fifth to break things open as Hurford, who had allowed just two earned runs all season coming into the game, gave up five earned in Sunday's defeat.

Freshman reliever James Kontur pitched well in relief, allowing just one run over 3.1 innings while striking out six. Trevor Beerman tossed a scoreless ninth inning, striking out a pair.

Up Next
The Pioneers are slated to visit Tiffin on Tuesday, April 10th for a single nine-inning, non-conference matchup.
