Men's Basketball to Play Regular Season Finale

The Malone University men's basketball team will play their final regular season game on Saturday against Lake Erie. Both teams are in tight battles for tournament seeding. The Pioneers will enter the tournament as either the third or fourth seed. In order to become the third seed Malone needs to win on Saturday and Hillsdale needs to lose. A loss by Malone or a Hillsdale victory will seal the Pioneers into the fourth seed. Lake Erie will be the seventh seed with a win against Malone or will be the eighth seed with a loss.

Malone Team Notes

Record: 19-8 (12-7)

  • The Pioneers go into their regular season finale on a stretch where they have won 10 out of their last 12 contests. The team will look to get back into the groove after a hiccup against Walsh in their last game. Walsh handed Malone both of their losses in that twelve-game stretch.

  • The Pioneers are ranked tenth in the Midwest Region. Malone was eighth in last week's rankings, dropping down two spots this week.

  • A win on Saturday would give the Pioneers their 20th win of the season. The win would mark the first time the Pioneers have won 20 or more games since Hal Smith's team went 21-10 in the 2008-09 season, Smith's last season at Malone.

  • The Pioneers continue to lead the G-MAC in three-point shooting. Malone is shooting 39.1% from three, making 288 of 736 attempts.

  • Malone is tied with Findlay for highest assists per game, averaging 16.6 assists per contest. Their assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.4 trails only Findlay. Daylan Haynie and Ty Jordan both are in the top five in assists in the conference.

  • Jaret Majestic is leading the conference in three-point percentage, making 48.6% of his attempts. Although Majestic does not meet the requirements to be listed among the nation's leaders, only four players who meet the requirements in all of Division II have a higher three-point percentage than Majestic. In order to be eligible, players must make at least 2.5 threes per game and play in 75% of the team's games. Majestic has played in 92.6% of Malone's games, but is averaging just over 2.0 made three-pointers per game.
