The Malone University men's soccer team wrapped up its 2018 season on Tuesday night with a 3-2 overtime defeat in a non-conference contest at California University of Pennsylvania.
The Pioneers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute of play as
Nathan McFeaters tallied his third goal of the season, beating the Vulcan goalkeeper after collecting a pass from
Gino Finelli.
California knotted things up at 1-1 in the 64th minute as Paul Young Jr. scored off a cross from teammate Dimitri Tsetezoh.
A penalty-kick goal from Eric Campbell put the hosts in front in the 79th minute.
Moments later, the Pioneers were awarded a penalty kick of their own and senior
Jordan Young delivered, knotting things up at 2-2 with the first goal of his Malone career.
The contest then headed to overtime and, in the fourth minute of the extra frame, Campbell struck again for the Vulcans, scoring the game-winner off a rebound.
California held a 24-9 edge in total shots and a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.
A total of 28 Malone players saw time in Tuesday's match. In his first start of the season, goalkeeper
Nick Wilhelm made six saves.
The Vulcans moved to 3-8-4 with the win while Malone fell to 6-10-1.
The Pioneers finished seventh in the final
Great Midwest Athletic Conference regular-season standings. Although the team narrowly missed out on securing one of the six G-MAC Postseason Tournament spots, 2018 marked an impressive turnaround for the Pioneers under the leadership of first-year head coach
Eric Reed. Malone's six victories marked the program's highest win total since 2012 and the squad's 17 goals marked the team's highest scoring total since 2013.
