Pioneers Carry Five-Match Winning Streak into Weekend Homestand

Malone's win streak is its longest since winning six in a row in 2012.

The Malone University volleyball team will put its five-match winning streak to the test this weekend against Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) East Division opposition Ursuline College and Lake Erie College. After winning all five matches on the road, Malone will return home to welcome Ursuline on Friday, September 29th before hosting Lake Erie on Saturday, September 30th.
 
The Pioneers are 5-1 in the G-MAC this season and 10-4 overall. Malone's five-match winning streak is the longest since taking six straight in 2012. All five matches have gone to at least four sets and three of them went to the fifth. The Pioneers are 4-0 in five-setters this season.

Malone Notes 
  • The Pioneers are coming off a 3-0 weekend that featured a five-set win over Davis & Elkins, and four-set wins over Alderson Broaddus and Ohio Valley. Malone lost the first set in all three of those matches, but battled back to earn three victories and remained tied with Lake Erie for second place in the G-MAC East.
  • Veronica Gehring, was outstanding at the pin, totaling a team-high 46 kills in those three matches. On the season, she leads Malone with 2.76 kills per set and has at least 15 kills in four straight matches.
  • Mallory Adams had a great week in her own right, collecting three consecutive doubles while averaging better than a block a set. On the season, Adams is averaging 2.68 kills, 2.48 digs, 1.05 blocks and ranks 2nd in the G-MAC in service aces (22).
  • Abbie Swaino and Sydney Black are second on the team with 13 service aces. The Pioneers, who collected 30 aces last weekend, are 4th in the G-MAC with 1.70 aces per set.
  • Cathryn Miller leads the Pioneers in assists with 342 (6.43/s) while Swaino has 132 (3.88/s).
  • Faith Lau (2.34 k/s) and Rachel Santos (1.77 k/s) are third and fourth on the team in kills.  Lau had 20 kills in two matches against Ursuline last season when each team won on the other's home court.
  • On the defensive end, Maggie Hamrock leads the team with 3.68 digs per set. She has recorded nine or more digs in every match this season and is three away from 800 in her career.
  • At the net, freshman Brooklyn Sullivan is averaging 0.87 blocks per set. Among freshmen, Sullivan is 2nd in the G-MAC in blocks and 25th in NCAA DII.
  • As a team, Malone is 2nd in the G-MAC in team blocks (2.04/s) and team digs (16.16/s). The Pioneers are also 5th in kills (11.66/s), hitting (.176), and opponents' hitting (.168).
  • Malone is 4-1 at home this season
     
Ursuline Notes - Roster | Schedule | Stats
  • Ursuline enters Friday's match with a 5-11 record and a 1-5 mark in conference. The Arrows are coming off of a five-set loss to Notre Dame (OH) on Tuesday.
  • Victoria Henderson totaled a team-high 18 kills in the loss. On the season, she is averaging 3.89 kills per set, the 4th-most in the G-MAC.
  • Setter Katelyn Selleny, older sister of Malone's Elizabeth Selleny, is 5th in the G-MAC in assists with 8.67 per set.
  • Freshman defensive specialist Zoe Skinner leads the team and is 6th in the G-MAC in digs (4.47 d/s).
  • As a team, Ursuline is 3rd in the conference in digs (16.10 d/s) and 4th in opponents' kills allowed (11.48 k/s).

  • The Storm are off to a hot start in their first year in the Great Midwest, winning five of the first six conference contests. They are 11-4 overall.
  • Lake Erie is ranked in the top-5 in the G-MAC in hitting (.235; 3rd), opponents' hitting (.163; 3rd), kills (13.21 k/s; 3rd), assists (12.56 a/s; 1st), blocks (1.96 b/s; 4th), and digs (16.00 d/s; 4th).
  • Right side hitter Bethany Fisher is 3rd in the G-MAC in kills, averaging 3.90 per set, and 9th in hitting (.279)
  • Middle hitter Lexi Lombardo leads the conference in hitting (.336) and leads the team with 0.85 blocks a set.
  • Libero Sidney Fletcher, a 2016 GLIAC Honorable Mention selection, leads the team and ranks 3rd in the G-MAC in digs (4.75 d/s).
