The Malone University women's basketball team avenged a 12-point loss to Cedarville University last month with an impressive 74-52 win over the visiting Yellow Jackets Saturday afternoon in Osborne Hall. The win also snapped a string of 21 consecutive Cedarville victories over Malone dating back to the 2000-2001 season.
Â
In a defensive struggle early on, the two teams combined to miss their first 14 shots before Malone senior point guard
Rachel Goddard finally put two points on the board nearly five minutes into the opening quarter. Her five-foot jumper proved to be the game-winner as Malone led for the duration of the game.
Â
After a
Hannah McCue three-pointer made it 5-0, the Yellow Jackets closed to within one possession just two more times in the contest. The second time, an old-fashioned three-point play by Cedarville's Taylor Buckley made it 12-9 late in the first quarter before
Chrissie Vaughan drilled a three-pointer to give Malone a 15-9 lead through one.
Â
The Pioneers began to pull away in the second quarter on the strength of 8-of-12 shooting from the field and a trio of three-pointers. Malone delivered a dominant defensive effort throughout the first half and led by as many as 21 points before a deep three by Baylee Bennett made it 38-20 moments before halftime. The stingy Pioneer defense forced 12 Cedarville turnovers and limited the visitors to just 34.6% (9-of-26) shooting over the first 20 minutes.
Â
Malone maintained a large lead throughout the second half and comfortably closed the afternoon with the 74-52 victory. Just three weeks ago in Cedarville, the Yellow Jackets handed Malone a 73-61 defeat that snapped Malone's nine-game winning streak. The Pioneers responded with a tremendous all-around performance on Saturday that extended a home winning streak to eight games.
Overall, Malone climbed to 16-6 on the season and 9-2 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. Cedarville dropped to 14-10 and 6-5 in the G-MAC
