Malone Volleyball Swept by Walsh

The Malone University volleyball team dropped to 14-10 on the season and 8-5 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference after losing to Walsh 19-25, 19-25, 21-25 Thursday night in North Canton. It was the Pioneers' second loss of the season to Walsh, who improved to 16-9 on the year and 9-4 in the G-MAC. With the defeat, Malone fell to third place in the G-MAC East Division.
 
Recap
The Cavaliers used a 9-1 run early in the first set to propel themselves to a 10-3 lead. Malone trimmed the deficit to three points on three separate occasions but failed to mount a complete comeback. The Pioneer attack then struggled in the second set, hitting .000 while racking up nine attack errors as Walsh opened up a two sets to none lead.
 
In the third and final set, Malone and Walsh played to a 20-20 tied before the hosts pulled away by winning five of the final six points. Malone was guilty of seven more attack errors in the set and finished the match with an even 20. The Pioneers recorded a season-low 31 kills in the contest as they suffered their fourth-straight loss.
 
Veronica Gehring and Mallory Adams each posted eight kills to pace the team. Hannah Eliason added seven kills while Cathryn Miller tossed in 22 assists. Sydney Black, Julia Marino, and Abbie Swaino each collected a service ace.
 
Defensively, Maggie Hamrock registered a match-high 13 digs. Adams, Gehring, Eliason, and Rachel Santos each had two blocks.
 
The Pioneers return to action this Saturday, October 28th against nationally-ranked Wheeling Jesuit in a non-conference match at 3:00 pm.
