Volleyball Preview Notes: Pioneers Travel to Ashland on Tuesday

Veronica Gehring is 2nd on the team with 2.36 kills per set

The Malone University volleyball team will continue a challenging stretch of road matches this Tuesday, September 13th when the Pioneers travel to Ashland for a 7:00 pm meeting . Tuesday's non-conference contest will mark the fourth straight against a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) opponent. After spending the last four years in the GLIAC, Malone transitions to the Great Midwest Athletics Conference (G-MAC) this fall. The G-MAC schedule will begin next weekend.

Team Notes
Malone Pioneers (2-5): Roster | Schedule | Statistics
  • Malone finished 0-3 at the University of Findlay this past weekend losing a four-set match to Ohio Dominican and three-set matches to Hillsdale and Findlay
  • Through their first seven matches, the Pioneers are averaging 10.96 kills per set and rank third among G-MAC teams in service aces (1.60 per set)
  • Outside hitter Mallory Adams leads the team in both hitting (.225) and kills per set (2.96) while Veronica Gehring is second on the squad with 2.36 kills per set
  • Setter Cathryn Miller is currently third in the G-MAC with 9.00 assists/set while defensive specialist Maggie Hamrock leads Malone with eight service aces
  • Defensively, Lynsey Trusty leads Malone with 4.12 digs per set (7th in the GLIAC). Middle blocker Haley Kool leads Malone with 0.80 blocks per set (9th in the G-MAC).
  • Hannah Eliason is second on the squad in blocks (0.75/set) while Hamrock is second in digs (1.88/set)
  • Malone lost to the Eagles in three sets last season (13-25, 14-25, 14-25)  

Ashland Eagles (5-3): Roster | Schedule | Statistics
  • The Eagles are coming off a 1-3 weekend at the University of Indianapolis that included losses to two NCAA DII top-30 teams
  • Ashland averages 12.72 kills per set and leads the GLIAC with 59 service aces
  • Senior OH Alli Cudworth (2015 All-GLIAC First Team) ranks second in the conference in kills per set (4.13) and first in service aces (16)
  • Senior OH Casey Clark (2015 All-GLIAC Second Team) is second on the team in kills (2.50 per set)
  • Junior libero Melanie Aguayo leads the defense with 3.34 kills per set

Malone will play four matches at the Urbana University Invitational this weekend.
