Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Ties Davis & Elkins at 50 Year Celebration

On a beautiful afternoon in which the men's soccer team was celebrating its 50th year of play, the Pioneers ended in a 2-2 tie against Davis & Elkins. Today's large crowd got to witness an exciting game that saw just about every situation they could possibly dream up in the double overtime game.

The Pioneers were the first to get on the board. Nick Astalos booted in a goal off of a corner kick from Caleb Griffith just three minutes into the game. That would be the only goal of the first half.

Twenty minutes into the second half the Senators tied the game at one apiece. On a foul deep in Pioneer territory, Fredrik Hedemark of Davis & Elkins kicked the ball towards the goal. His teammate, Alex Samarzich then headed the ball to Benjamin Pasture who finally put the ball into the back of the net.

Not even a full minute later, Malone's Gino Finelli put the Pioneers back on top 2-1. As the Senators' goalie, Hedi Mehnaoui, attempted to roll the ball out to a teammate after a save, Finelli snuck in, took the ball and took it in for a goal. Tonight's goal was Finelli's second of the season.

With ten minutes remaining in regulation, the Senators tied the game up again with a bit of déjà vu. Once again Fredrik Hedemark kicked a ball off a foul in Pioneer territory. This time the header came from Niklas Rasch-Hegelund, who sent the ball to Benjamin Pasture for his second goal of the night.

Despite giving up two goals on the evening, goal keeper Cody Hilty racked up ten saves on the afternoon, and the Pioneers had another team save as well.

Malone will travel to Nashville, Tennessee to take on Trevecca Nazarene on Thursday, Sept. 10th at 7:30 CST (8:30 EST).
