Women's Basketball Preview Notes: Pioneers Prepared for a Pair of GLIAC South Bouts

Tara Schaffter has scored at least eight points in 20 of 22 games this season.

The Malone University women's basketball team will continue GLIAC South competition this week, meeting Tiffin University on the road Thursday night (February 11) at 6:00 pm before returning home to host Ohio Dominican University on Saturday afternoon (February 13) at 1:00 pm

All-Time Series:
The Pioneers are 19-23 against Tiffin; their last victory coming in a 66-62 road matchup a season ago.
Malone is 32-30 all-time versus Ohio Dominican. Since a two-game sweep of the Panthers in 2014-15, the Pioneers have lost three straight.

Malone Notes: 
  • The Pioneers are coming off of 1-1 weekend that saw them earn their first GLIAC South victory of the season in a 61-57 comeback win over Lake Erie on Thursday before falling to NCAA DII #3 Ashland 78-50 on Saturday
  • In earlier season matchups, Malone was defeated at home by Tiffin 72-64...two days later, Malone lost 82-59 at Ohio Dominican
  • All season long, the Pioneers have lived and died by the three...Malone ranks 2nd in the GLIAC in both three-pointers made (8.2) and three-pointers attempted per game (25.5)...Malone knocked down 12-of-32 threes in the victory over Lake Erie
  • Junior guard Rachel Goddard has connected on 33-of-97 long balls this season including the game-clincher versus the Lakers...the Pioneers' leading scorer, at 13.1 ppg, also leads the GLIAC in minutes per game (35.6) and assists per game (4.2)...in three previous matchups with Tiffin, Goddard has averaged 19.7 ppg
  • Tara Schaffter has had a breakout senior season, more than doubling her junior-year scoring (5.6 ppg) to 11.5 points a night...the 6'0" forward recorded a career-high 6 assists last Thursday and is averaging 7.0 rebounds over her last four games
  • Freshman guard Chrissie Vaughan is posting 10.8 points a night this season and despite modest shooting struggles as of late (21.2%  in her last four games) is still 4th in the GLIAC with 51 made threes...she leads the squad with 27 steals
  • Senior Bri Libertore is Malone's leading rebounder at 6.2 boards per game and chips in 7.1 points per contest...in addition, Libertore leads the squad with 14 blocks and has registered 42 assists from her high post position
  • Junior Alaina Schwarz rounds out the starting five...the 5'9" guard has bucketed at least one three-pointer in nine straight games and is shooting 41.1% from beyond the arc this season
  • Alahna Singleton has provided a spark off the bench, scoring 8.4 points a game since returning from an early-season injury...the sophomore guard is shooting 51.9% from deep this season...that figure would rank 2nd in the GLIAC had she played in enough games to qualify
  • Saturday's showdown will be Singleton's first meeting with Ohio Dominican since scoring a then career-high 19 points a season ago
  • Thursday's game with Tiffin marks the Pioneers' second encounter with former head coach Jason Mishler who guided Malone to a 55-55 mark in four years at the helm

Tiffin Notes:
  • Jason Mishler's Dragons squad is coming off a weekend split, topping Wayne State (MI) 64-58 on Thursday before suffering a narrow 71-65 defeat to Findlay
  • Earlier this season, Tiffin shot a then NCAA DIi-high 73.3% (11-15) from three-point range in the 72-64 win over Malone
  • Like Malone, the Dragons like to shoot the three, averaging 21.5 attempts while connecting on the second most per team in conference play (7.9 makes per game)
  • Freshman Ali Schirmer hit 5-of-6 threes en route a to a career-high 20 points in the win over Malone and matched that total with 20 in the win over Wayne State...on the season, the 5'5" guard is averaging 10.9 ppg and ranks 3rd in the GLIAC with 51 three-pointers
  • Classmate Allie Miller (6.9 ppg) poured in a game-high 21 markers against the Pioneers...the 5'8" guard is 6th in the GLIAC in three-point shooting percentage (41.8%)
  • Junior Bre Nauman,Tiffin's leading scorer and rebounder on the season, is 9th in the conference in scoring (14.5 ppg) and 6th in rebounding (8.5 rpg)...the 6'0" center scored 13 points and pulled down a season-high 15 rebounds against Malone
  • Junior guard Kaylee Patton was the fourth Dragon to reach double-digit points versus Malone, finishing with 10 
  • As a team, the Dragons are 4th in the nation in free-throw shooting (78.3%)

Ohio Dominican Notes:
  • After winning four straight and ten of their last eleven overall (their lone blemish being a 66-62 setback to nationally-ranked Ashland), ODU sits in a three-way tie for second place in the GLIAC
  • Among GLIAC teams, Ohio Dominican ranks 3rd in points per game (73.4), 1st in rebounds (43.5), 2nd in blocks (4.7) and 5th in steals (10.9)...in all of NCAA DII, ODU is 9th in rebounding margin (+9.6)
  • In an 82-59 win over the Malone three weeks ago, the Panthers outrebounded the Pioneers 39-26, recorded 5 blocks and season-high 17 steals...the Panthers turned 24 Malone turnovers into 29 points including 24 of the fast break variety
  • Lauren Bates lead four Panthers in double-digit scoring, finishing with 18 points,8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 6 steals against Malone...the 5'11" junior is averaging 12.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per contest...on the year, Bates is 11th in the GLIAC with 68 assists as well as 2nd in the GLIAC and 5th in the nation with 72 steals
  • Melissa Scherpenberg ranks 12th in scoring (13.8 ppg), 2nd in rebounding (10.7 rpg), 11th in steals (42) and 8th in blocks (31)...the 6'1" senior forward tallied 15 points, 9 boards, 2 blocks, and 2 steals in the win over Malone
  • Forward Madi Rittinger posted 12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks versus Malone...the 6'0" junior (11.4 ppg, 6.8 rpg) has recorded 65 assists and a GLIAC-leading 45 blocked shots
  • Megan Eyre was the 4th Panther to reach double-digits vs. Malone, adding 11 points, 5 assists, and 4 steals 
  • Sophomore guard Darian Rose, who recently made her way into the starting five, is averaging 10.3 ppg over her last eight outings
