Archived Video Broadcast

The Malone University women's basketball team went on the road Saturday to earn a convincing 83-46 win over Bluefield State College (WV) as 14 different Pioneers cracked the scoring column in the victory. With the win, Malone, who led from start to finish, climbed to 2-3 on the season while the Bluefield State dropped to 0-8.

Malone set the tone early with a 17-1 run, featuring a pair of three pointers by Hannah McCue and capped off by a Naomi Grandison three of her own, to start the game. A Holly Groff layup in the final minute of the first quarter gave Malone a 23-8 advantage after one.

The lead continued to swell in the second quarter as the Pioneers outscored the Blues 18-11 to take a 41-19 lead into the break. At halftime, Malone was outshooting BSC 43.6% (17-39) to just 25.0% (6-24) while forcing 13 first-half turnovers.

The Pioneers opened the third quarter with a 19-5 run, highlighted by a pair of Chrissie Vaughan threes and a fastbreak layup, to go ahead 60-24 before head coach Rick Tice decided to empty his bench with the game well out of reach. The two teams played close to even down the stretch as the Pioneers' second and third units narrowly outscored the Blues 23-22 over the final 13 minutes of the contest before Malone prevailed with the 83-46 non-conference win.

In an otherwise uneventful fourth quarter in which Malone outscored Bluefield State 16-13, Pioneer freshmen Ellen Doyle, Abbegael Esterak, and Sydney Foster all scored their first collegiate points. Fellow freshman Sydney Wentling achieved the feat with a three-pointer earlier in the second quarter.
