Despite trailing after one quarter, the Malone University women's basketball team prevailed 70-47 over visiting Carlow University (PA), outscoring the Celtics 62-35 over the final three quarters Saturday afternoon in Osborne Hall. With the win, Malone climbed to 4-4 on the season while Carlow dropped to 5-3. The win marked the third straight for the Pioneers on their home court.
In a sloppy first quarter that featured 13 combined turnovers, Carlow used a 5-for-10 shooting performance to jump out to a 12-8 lead. Malone managed just one field goal, an
Alaina Schwarz three-pointer for the game's first points, and a pair of free throws before a six-minute scoring drought turned a 5-2 lead into 12-5 deficit. Three free throws in the final minute cut the deficit to four points.
After a Carlow jumper increased the lead to six points in the opening minute of the second quarter, Malone put together a 7-0 run, capped off by another Schwarz three, to regain the advantage at 15-14. With the game tied at 18-18 later in the period, a trio of Malone threes sparked an 11-0 run that would put the Pioneers up for good. Malone outscored the Celtics 22-9 in the second stanza thanks in large part to a 15-6 rebounding margin that included eight offensive boards and 10 second-chance points.
In a contentious third quarter, Malone was whistled for 11 personal fouls that sent Carlow to the line 17 times. Fortunately for the Pioneers, the Celtics struggled at the charity stripe, connecting on just eight of their 17 free throws. Malone, meanwhile, went 6-for-7 at the line before going ahead 52-31 at the two-minute mark. With the Pioneers' second unit on the floor, the Celtics fought back with an 8-0 run to end the quarter down just 52-39.
With the Malone starters back on the floor at the beginning of the fourth, Malone used an 11-3 run to put the game back out of reach. The Pioneers held the Celtics to just eight points in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
