Volleyball Preview Notes: Malone Closes Out the Regular Season with Playoff Spots on the Line

Faith Lau posted a career-high 15 kills and 13 digs against Davis & Elkins earlier this season.

2016 G-MAC Standings

The Malone University volleyball team will have a chance to secure its spot in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Tournament this weekend when it closes out the season with road matches at Alderson Broaddus and Davis & Elkins. The Pioneers can guarantee their spot in the Championship with a win on Friday night over AB. Even with a loss on Friday, Coach Tanya Hockman's club can still get in on Saturday but a little scoreboard watching would be in order.

Team Notes
Malone (7-23, 3-5 G-MAC) Roster | Schedule | Stats
  • The Pioneers seemed to hit their stride with two wins last week over Ursuline and Notre Dame, but fell short against Walsh in three sets Tuesday night.
  • Despite the loss, libero Lynsey Trusty still managed another outstanding defensive performance with 22 digs in the match to move her season total to 559. The senior speedster will continue her assault on the Malone record book this weekend as she needs just 23 digs in her final two regular season matches to make it into the single-season top-10.
  • Another senior writing her name into the Malone record book is middle hitter Haley Kool who is already 5th in career block assists with 226. She recently moved into 10th all-time with 262 total blocks and has a chance to move into 9th with a solid end to the season
  • Sophomore outside hitter Veronica Gehring will have a chance at a personal milestone as well this weekend as she is 21 kills shy of 500 for her career. She tied a career-high with 17 kills against AB two weeks ago and is averaging 2.42 kills per set.
  • Fellow sophomore outside hitter Mallory Adams, who already collected her 500th career kill earlier this weekend is just five shy of 600. Adams is averaging a team-high 2.88 kills per set and has rounded out her game defensively, averaging 0.95 blocks per set over her last six matches.
  • The Pioneer defense played well as a whole against Davis & Elkins when they collected a season-high 94 digs in four sets. Trusty, Adams, Tori Hall, Maggie Hamrock, and Faith Lau all posted 12 or more digs.
  • In addition, to her career-high 13 digs, Lau tied a career-high 15 kills in the match for her third double-double of the season.
  • Setter Tori Hall has five double-doubles on the season, including three in the last six matches
  • Malone enters the weekend just 2-7 on the road this season, both of those wins, though, have come in conference matches.

Alderson Broaddus (5-26, 2-6 G-MAC) Roster | Schedule | Stats
  • The Battlers are in must-win mode this weekend as they are on the outside of the tournament looking in. ABU lost to Malone in four sets 14-25, 23-25, 25-23, 17-25 two weekends ago.
  • Lauren Daudelin, the team's leading attackerr with 2.26 kills per set, hit .462 with eight kills in the loss.
  • Megan Christman led the Battlers with 11 kills in the match while Joyce Eid led the defense with nine digs. Eid enters the weekend averaging 4.27 digs per set.
  • The Battlers have been victorious in two of their last three matches.

Davis & Elkins (13-17, 5-3 G-MAC) Roster | Schedule | Stats
  • In the Friday before Malone's victory over Alderson Broaddus, the Senators came back from a set down to beat the Pioneers 20-25, 25-20, 25-23, 26-24 in a crucial conference road win.
  • Outside hitters Elizabeth Estes and Anna Gallup both recorded 14 kills while Sasha Johnson posted a .550 attacking percentage and 11 kills in the win over Malone.
  • Johnson enters the weekend as the conference leader with 1.17 blocks per set.
  • The Senators enter the weekend winners of five of their last six matches.
.
Looking Ahead: The G-MAC Championship will be held at the Mason Area in Mason, Ohio November 17th-19th.
