The Malone University volleyball team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday afternoon by notching a Great Midwest Athletic Conference victory over visiting Alderson Broaddus University.
After opening the match with a convincing 25-14 victory in the opening set, Malone battled back from deficits of 18-12, 20-16 and 22-18 in the second frame, posting a 25-23 triumph after recording the final five points of the set.
The Battlers took the third set 25-23 before the Pioneers put the match away with a 25-17 victory in the fourth frame. With the win, Malone improved to 5-21 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
The Pioneers posted a hitting percentage of .298 on the afternoon which marked their best attack performance of the season.
Veronica Gehring led the way, tallying a career-high 17 kills on just 28 attempts for an impressive percentage of .464.
Faith Lau and
Mallory Adams each followed with 11 kills apiece while
Hannah Meckstroth matched her season-high with seven kills.
Lau added three service aces while senior libero
Lynsey Trusty tallied 15 digs. Setters
Tori Hall and
Cathryn Miller each notched 18 assists apiece. In addition, senior
Haley Kool posted four kills and a pair of blocks.
Prior to the match, Malone recognized Kool, Trusty, student assistant coach
Amanda Parker and their families.
Between sets two and three, the Pioneers also took time to honor Malone faculty members Bert Smith and Dr. Beth Clark-Thomas, as well as, a number of former Pioneer volleyball players.
The Pioneers will be back in action on Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. G-MAC contest at Ursuline College.
