Women’s Soccer Clinches G-MAC Postseason Spot With 3-1 Victory Over Ursuline

The Malone University women's soccer team secured the No. 6 seed in the upcoming Great Midwest Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament after registering a 3-1 victory in its regular-season finale against visiting Ursuline College on Tuesday afternoon.

The Pioneers will take part in an opening-round match on Saturday at the tournament's No. 3 seed, Cedarville University.

The semifinal and final round of the G-MAC Tournament will be held next week at the top seed, Trevecca Nazarene University.

Ursuline, which holds the No.2 tournament seed and will receive an opening-round bye, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead during Tuesday's match after scoring in the seventh minute of play.

The score then remained at 1-0 until the opening stages of the second half when freshman Kirsten Hilty found the back of the net off a nice pass from senior Christine Najjar, knotting things up at 1-1.

Hilty struck again in the 70th minute, putting Malone in front 2-1 after moving the ball along the end line and lofting a shot that appeared to pin-ball off a pair of Arrow defenders before crossing the goal line.  The pair of scores doubled Hilty's goal output on the season as she now has four goals and three assists in her rookie campaign.

The Pioneers then put the game out of reach a little over 10 minutes later.  Passes by junior Kaela Kovanda and freshman  Molli Dunn led to open territory for Darby Burch.  The junior charged up the right side of the field before launching a rocket shot that soared past the diving save attempt of the Arrows'  keeper and into the top corner of the net.  The impressive shot not only gave Burch her fourth goal of the year but it also marked the first time this season that Ursuline had given up more than two goals in a single match.

Malone enjoyed a 16-10 edge in total shots and an 8-3 edge in shots on goal.

Pioneer keeper Haleigh Seman picked up the victory after making two saves in 90 minutes in front of the net.

The victory improved Malone's record to 8-8-2 on the season, which marks the program's highest win total since 2010 when the squad finished with a final tally of 8-9-1.

Saturday's contest at Cedarville will start at 3:00 p.m.  Live video and stats will be provided (courtesy of the Cedarville Sports Information Department).
