The Malone University women's basketball team lost on the road Saturday to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) opponent Saginaw Valley State University 82-69.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Natalie Nickol and a layup by Naomi Grandison fueled the Pioneers to a 19-18 lead late in the first quarter. But the Cardinals, shooting 60% (18-30) from the floor in the first half, used a 26-8 run to extend their lead to as many as 17 points before Bri Libertore nailed a layup just before the half to make it 44-29.
Libertore's jumper following a Rachel Goddard three-pointer cut the SVSU lead to 10 early in the third quarter. The Cardinals, however, used a 14-2 run over three minutes to stretch the advantage to 58-36. Chrissie Vaughan scored three points the old-fashioned way before burying a triple to change the momentum. Another triple by Lexie Pittinger and an and-1 by Naomi Grandison cut the deficit back down to 10. Saginaw Valley's Emily Wendling hit two free throws to give the Cardinals a 64-52 edge heading into the 4th.
A Tara Schaffter jump shot opened the 4th quarter scoring to cut the deficit again down to 10 but that was as close as Malone would get. Wendling, the GLIAC's leading scorer, hit a three on the next possession as part of her 11 points in the quarter to help the Cardinals (6-4, 3-2 GLIAC) pull away for the 82-69 victory.
