The Malone University women's basketball team suffered an 82-47 loss to visiting Ashland University on Saturday afternoon.
Ashland, a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) opponent, would tally the first 11 points, holding Malone scoreless for the first four minutes of the game. The Pioneers would respond by notching 12 straight points to take the lead 12-11 with 12:58 left in the first half. After that, the Eagles took flight and outscored the Pioneers 26-5 over the remainder of the period to take a commanding 37-17 advantage into the locker room at intermission.
Ashland continued with the momentum, scoring the first seven points of the second half. Malone's
Alyssa Brandon would make three of her six three-pointers in the final six minutes of the game, but it wasn't enough as Ashland pulled away with an 82-47 victory.
Ashland finished the game going 33-for-65 (50.8%) from the field. The Eagles drained seven of their 16 (43.8%) three-pointers and went 9-for-11 (81.8%) at the free throw line. Malone, playing without five of its top seven scorers due to numerous injuries, struggled to get on track after rattling off the 12 straight points early in the first half. The Pioneers finished 16-for-61 (26.2%) from the field, 8-for-24 (33.3%) from deep and 7-for-10 (70%) from the free throw line.
Brandon finished the afternoon with a career-high 18 points, going 6-for-11 at the three-point line. Teammate
Sarah Bardall had a season-high 10 points, while adding four rebounds. In addition,
Tara Schaffter had a season-high eight rebounds and
Leslie Raifsnider contributed six points, five rebounds and two steals.
The Pioneers will continue conference play at home on Thursday, February 12th at 6:00 p.m. as they host Tiffin University. Live
