GameDay Notes: Men's Basketball Travels to Upper Peninsula to Play Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech Thursday & Saturday

Mitch Spotleson is averaging 10 rebounds per game and 16.3 points per game.

The Pioneers will begin Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Thursday and Saturday in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Malone will face Michigan Tech University on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. before taking on Northern Michigan University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

Malone Notes:
-Malone defeated Silver Lake College (WI) 107-71 last Tuesday at home. The Pioneers rolled past Silver Lake, 91-69, in their first ever meeting between the two schools during a home contest last season.
-In the game vs. SLC, the 107 points marked the most the Pioneers had scored in a game since February 23, 2012 in a 117-73 victory over Salem International.
-Malone exceeded or matched its previous season highs for points, field-goal percentage (56.4%), three-pointers made (13), assists (24), and steals (12) while committing a season-low nine turnovers.
-Nine Malone players scored during the game, six of which reached double figures.
-Guard Christian Graves led the squad with 28 points, matching his previous career high. He went 11 of 18 in field goals, including five of 11 at the three-point line.
-Forward Mitchell Spotleson notched a career-high 21 points. Spotleson was extremely efficient, connecting on 9-of-10 shots from the floor with his only miss coming from beyond the three-point arc. The sophomore also grabbed 10 rebounds and has now posted double-doubles in three of the Pioneers' first four regular-season games.
-Center Brian Stone is currently ranked seventh in the GLIAC in points, averaging 18.8 per game and second in the GLIAC in field goal percentage (74.3).
-Spotleson is currently second in the GLIAC in rebounds per game (10.0) and 10th in field goal percentage (65.0).
-As a team, the Pioneers are ranked fourth in the GLIAC in total rebounds, averaging 41.5 per game and fifth in assists, averaging 17.5 per game.

Michigan Tech Notes:
-Kevin Luke has been at the helm of the Huskies' program for 22 years. He has guided Michigan Tech to five GLIAC Conference titles.
-MTU lost 77-58 to Walsh University last season in the GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals. Also, last season, the Huskies were selected to the NCAA Division II Tournament, but lost 74-53 to the University of Indianapolis in the Midwest Regional. 
-The Huskies lost their home-opener to the University of Minnesota Duluth by the final score of 74-68. They went on to beat Southern Wesleyan University 85-71 at the Kentucky Wesleyan Classic, but then loss 69-51 at Kentucky Wesleyan University. 
-13 players are returning from last season's squad. Freshmen Kyle Monroe is leading the team in points, averaging 21.0 per game. He is currently fifth in the GLIAC in points per game (21.0) and ninth in rebounds per game (7.7).
-Sophomore Dillon Gordon is ninth in the GLIAC in assists per game, averaging 4.0 per game.
-As a team, the Huskies are currently ninth in assists per game (14.7).
-Michigan Tech was picked to finish seventh in the GLIAC North Division preseason poll. 

Northern Michigan Notes:
-Bill Sall is entering his third season as the Wildcats' head men's basketball coach.
-Northern Michigan opened their season with two straight losses; one on the road to the University of Minnesota Duluth (79-67) and the second one on the road to Kentucky Wesleyan University (72-63). Their first win of the season was at the Kentucky Wesleyan Classic, beating Southern Wesleyan University by the final score of 80-52.
-Seven players are returning from last year's squad. Freshman Naba Echols is leading the team in points, averaging 16.3 per game.
-Senior Terry Nash is sixth in the GLIAC in assists per game, averaging 4.7 a game.
-Northern Michigan was picked to finish eighth in the North Division in the GLIAC preseason poll.

The Pioneers will continue Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next week with a pair of home games that will be played at Osborne Hall. Malone will face Lake Superior State University (MI) on Thursday, December 10th at 8:00 p.m. before taking on Northwood University (MI) on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
