The Malone University women's basketball team suffered its first home Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) loss of the season after falling to the Timberwolves of Northwood University (MI) 69-51 Saturday afternoon in Osborne Hall.
After a Rachel Goddard three-pointer opened the scoring in Malone's first possession, the Pioneers went on a nearly nine minute scoring drought that saw them go 0-for-13 from the field. Despite being outscored 12-5 in the first quarter Malone's defense, highlighted by four steals from guard Audrey Myers, played well, holding Northwood to 5-19 shooting.
The second quarter, however, was a different story as the Northwood offense found its rhythm. The Timberwolves went 11-of-19 and drained seven three-pointers en route to a 30-14 second-quarter drubbing and a 42-19 halftime advantage. Malone, playing without injured sharpshooter Chrissie Vaughan, finished just 4-of-22 (18.2%) from the field in its lowest scoring half of the season.
The Timberwolves' offensive onslaught continued in the second half as Northwood extended the lead to 61-36 after three quarters. With the game far out of reach, both head coaches emptied their benches in the fourth. Malone outscored Northwood 15-8 in the final frame but it was too little too late as the Pioneers fell 69-51.
