The Malone University women's soccer team fell 6-0 at NCAA Division II #1 Grand Valley State University on Tuesday evening in the quarterfinal round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Lakers, seeded first among the eight-team tournament field, took command of the contest early on by scoring twice in the first ten minutes of play. The two-time defending NCAA Division II National Champions added goals in the 35th and 36 minutes to take a 4-0 advantage into halftime and then completed the scoring with two more tallies in the second half.
Six different players scored for GVSU, led by forward Kendra Stauffer, who tallied one goal and three assists.
Pioneer goalkeeper
Leah Rauscher notched a season-high 15 saves.
The victory extended GVSU's winning streak to 17 straight matches and sets up a semifinal round match-up against the tournament's No. 4 seed, Ohio Dominican University.
The loss brings to a close a terrific 2015 season for the Pioneers. Malone not only earned the first GLIAC Tournament berth in program history, but the squad also posted its highest win total since 2010 and its highest goals scored total since transitioning to NCAA Division II membership.
